Thru April 15 at Ruidoso Chamber of Commerce (Sudderth Dr.) Julia Price, M.A., has painted professionally for more than 20 years and has been in many solo and group shows nationwide. She studied at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and has received several awards for excellence. Henriette Wyeth Memorial School Art Festival
March 31 - April 14 & April 21-May 5 at Hubbard Museum of the American West (Hwy. 70, Ruidoso Downs) School art festival opens on the main floor with works by high school students from Lincoln and Otero counties. Mescalero artist Oliver Enjady will judge this year's high school competition. Awards will be presented to the top contestants at a reception on April 7 from 1-3pm. High school art show closes April 14, and the K-8 show opens April 21. A reception from 1-3pm on April 28 features a performance by the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice tour, free to the public. From the Ground Up XXI
April 5 - May 4 at Richardson Gallery, Branigan Cultural Center (500 N. Water St., Las Cruces) The Potters' Guild of Las Cruces welcomes Seattle-based sculptor Doug Jeck, this year's juror for the ceramic exhibition 'From the Ground Up.' Jeck presents a special lecture Friday, April 5, at 7:15 pm in the Branigan Center's Shannon Room following the show's opening reception (5-7 pm). The lecture includes a slide show of Jeck's figurative sculpture, which he refers to as "human objects." These exquisitely detailed, life-sized forms combine classical elements with iconoclastic fragmentation.
MasterWorks of New Mexico
April 6 - 28, 10 am - 5 pm daily (closed Mondays) at NM State Fairgrounds, Albuquerque Hispanic Arts Bldg. The talents of fine artists from throughout the state are showcased in this event, sponsored by the Pastel Society of NM, NM Watercolor Society, Rio Grande Art Assoc., and "Miniature Arts Bardean." Show includes free demonstrations by artists such as Jan Keefer, Leo Nuefeld, Adair Peterson and Jeane Weitz. Betty Sabo will give a slide presentation of her work, and NMWS sponsors workshops with Ann Smith and Lynn McLaine.
Thru April at Lydia's Art and Music Gallery, inside Round Sound Records (1120 New York Ave., Alamogordo) Reception with the Artist, April 12, 5:30-9:00pm. This collection of photographs is of the patrons and workers at a drive-in fast food establishment. The desire to photograph old things as they are seen in the present began as a way of collecting icons of the past. Now I search for the past in the people, places and objects of the present. I have chosen photography to convey this nostalgic feeling instead of writing, for a reason that is similar to Lewis Hine's, "If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn't have to lug a camera."

Taylor & Frazier
April Featured Artists at The Gallery (107 E. 5th Street, Roswell) continues to add new talented artists to its membership. Deborah C. Taylor, newly arrived from Boulder, Colorado, paints in oils in an impressionistic style. Her wide range of interests is reflected in her choices of subject matter and techniques. Some particularly unique sources of inspiration are antique tintypes, archival photographs and CDV's, or carte-de-visites. The resulting images are infused with a vibrant sense of light, giving her subjects new life and relevance. Virginia Frazier is also a new resident of Roswell. Frazier is perhaps best known for her animal portraits in pastels. Her subjects include the wild, the endangered and the domestic, and are done with great sensitivity. Edie Tsong
Thru April 21 at Roswell Museum & Art Center (100 W. 11th, Roswell) Artist-In-Residence Edie Tsong uses found and collected materials like newspapers, magazines, letters, notes, junkmail. She enjoys manipulating culture to reveal alternative meaning. Her project in Roswell was to draw people - with simple line drawings - and in turn have those people draw her. Thru April 28 at Albuquerque Museum (2000 Mountain Rd. NW) A major exhibition exploring 2000 years of art created about the legendary area known as Aztlan, the mythical place of origin for the Aztec people. More than 250 rare examples of art and archaeological artifacts ranging from pre-Columbian objects, to paintings and sculpture from the colonial era, to videos and mixed-media works by contemporary artists. Family activities include "create your own codex" and computer stations where visitors can explore Aztlan on the web. Daily public tour 2 p.m., free with paid museum admission.
